Note:Ralph James, a professor of industrial relations at MIT, began his relationship with Hoffa by inviting him to speak to students while he was in Boston to negotiate a trucking agreement. That first meeting led to many others, as James spent time observing and interviewing Hoffa, even traveling with him for a number of months while he carried out his Teamster duties. As James says in his introduction, "The purpose of this book is neither to praise nor to damn Jimmy Hoffa. Rather we wish to contribute to a greater understanding of one of our most powerful and least comprehended public figures -- the president of the country's largest unon, a man who was made notorious by teh McClellan Committee eight years ago [1957] and whose name is now a household word." (Hoffa disappeared July 30, 1975 in Detroit and was pronounced legally dead July 30, 1982.)
