They give attention to both family assessment and intervention, and place particular emphasis on the strengths of single parents. Also highlighted are the value and need of supportive networks and policies that enable parents to meet their dual roles of caregivers and wage earners. The authors address such important dimensions as gender and ethnic differences in single parenting. The book is an excellent addition to literature on family-centered practice. It is written in a clear and concise manner, with helpful topical headings. The complexity and challenge of practice with one-parent families is a pervasive theme throughout the book, and a variety of contemporary techniques and skills for effective intervention are offered.
