Note:"This two-volume collection is part of a series titled 'Intersections: Yearbook for Early Modern Studies.' This particular work looks at the origins of modern science and its newfound affiliation with technology, using Francis Bacon as a touchstone. Most of the papers are not so much about Bacon as about his contemporaries, running in a loosely chronological order from those who influenced him to those whom he influenced. The essays range freely between history and philosophy, starting with a discussion of which French theorists may have influenced Bacon's work, moving through the nature of invention, observation, and the technologies of scientific observation, touching upon a variety of utopias, and dwelling at length upon the nature of metaphor and how the development of new metaphors can transform and define science. They end with a discussion of the influences of the Baconian worldview on both ideas and technologies over the next century. The writings assume much prior knowledge in the field and a working knowledge of German, French, and Latin. Nonetheless, it is an excellent resource for research libraries catering to philosophers or historians. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate, research, and faculty collections." P. L.
