Note:"The conventional wisdom of the 1980s and 1990s is that successful economic development strategies require almost complete reliance on market forces combined with an emphasis on exports. Development experts frequently cite the newly industrialized economies of East Asia as examples of the success of such market-oriented policies. Presumably, they should also work well in the financial sectors of developing nations. Yet, based on case studies of the financial systems of five Asian and two Latin American nations, the editors and other contributors to this volume suggest that the historical record is not so simple. Korea and Taiwan were able to achieve quite remarkable economic growth rates with financial systems that were predominantly state owned or controlled. At the other extreme, Brazil's more market-directed financial system has produced far less spectacular economic growth rates. These counter-examples may not destroy the conventional wisdom, but they are worthy of serious consideration. The contributors are first-rate. The case studies were carefully selected and well integrated. The editors should be congratulated on a timely and important contribution to the economic policy debate." -- Choice review
