Note:"Jemison's story became one of the most popular captivity narratives in U.S. history, going into over twenty editions in its first hundred years. The work was first published by James E. Seaver as A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison (1824). Seaver met with Jemison for three days in November 1823. Although the book that resulted is hardly a word-for-word rendering of Jemison and includes additions and florid language that are hardly in the style of a bilingual frontier woman, it is, however, the best account we have of Jemison's life." -- American National Biography
