Note:"The popular image of the Irish rebellion against British rule that broke out in May 1798 is that of a traditional Catholic peasant uprising, brutally crushed by English troops. In fact, many of the leaders were Protestant political radicals inspired by the American and French Revolutions; and many of the Crown troops who put down the rising were Irish militiamen. The arrests of most of the leaders robbed the rebellion of its direction and enlightened aims, and the campaign descended into a spiral of religious hatred and atrocities. This book describes and illustrates both sides in this tragic episode, including many little-known Militia, Yeomanry and Fencible units."--Publisher's note
