Note:"This books aims to bring the full range of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's writings on religion to the broad public. There are previous collections of Jefferson's writings. Ditto for Madison. But editions of one individual's writings don't give a systematic picture of what the other was writing at the same time. And few focus on religion. Putting their writings together, chronologically, gives us a more three-dimensional picture of their religious politics. This is especially rewarding for particular periods rich in historic writings. In 1784-89, Jefferson was U.S. Minister to France, with its revolutionaries meeting in his home, while Madison passed Virginia's Statute for Religious Freedom anad then the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Their retirements after their Presidencies, Jefferson 1809-1826, Madison 1817-1936, produced some of their most profund commentaries on religion." -- Editor's note to readers
