Note:"Rupert of Deutz (born ca. 1075-1080, died ca. 1129) was a Benedictine monk and theologian who became the abbot of a monastery in Deutz, a town that is now a suburb of Cologne, Germany. Rupert was involved in theological controversies of the twelfth century and wrote many works on theology and Biblical interpretation. His "Commentary on the Songs of Songs" employs typological and allegorical approaches to exegesis. A distinctive feature of his unusual interpretation is his depiction of this book as presenting the voices of Jesus and Mary. The original language of the commentary is Latin. Rupert refers to this Biblical book (which is part of the Hebrew Scriptures, or Old Testament) as the "Songs (plural) of Songs" (Latin: Cantica Canticorum), although the normally-used title is "Song (singular) of Songs" (Latin: Canticum Canticorum)"-- Provided by publisher.
