$a"Montgomery's Beyond Equality ... put the working class at the center of the failure of Radical Republicanism. The premise of that important book, which was far ahead of its time and thus went relatively unappreciated, was the centrality of the "labor problem" in the North to national affairs. As Montgomery put it so pithily: "Class conflict was the submerged shoal on which Radical dreams floundered." Here he also anticipated much later work with his refusal to accept the standard Commons-Perlman-Grob analysis that bread-and-butter, pure-and simple trade unionism was essentially American and proletarian and that any contesting working-class ideology was imported, that is foreign, in both national and class terms." -- from a review of "Gutman and Montgomery: Politics and Direction of U.S. Lbor and Working Class History in the 1980s" by Gregory S.
