$a"Today [1983] the American youth of those unrepeatable years are grandfathers. We asked them to tell us their memories of days and nights in England and Europe. These stories are some of them. Our thanks are due to the hundreds of Americans who responded to our request to send their personal experiences of the war, and particularly to the thirty or so whose stories we eventually selected. Naturally, these have had to be edited, but we have preserved the spirit of each story as faithfully as possible. Read as a whole, they offer a unique insight into what the war was really like -- there and then." -- Introduction |
